First 5 Los Angeles features a program called Welcome Baby, where parents have the opportunity to learn about their new roles as mom and dad, early childhood development, and obtaining assistance on issues like health care, insurance coverage, nutrition, breastfeeding, family violence, maternal depression, and home safety. This is a free, community-wide, voluntary program for pregnant and postpartum women. This program first launched in 2009 with the goal of maximizing the health, safety, and security of babies and parents. This program includes prenatal visits, postpartum visits, and a hospital visit. Welcome Baby includes an in-hospital visit, a personal Parent Coach, information and support on breastfeeding, referrals to community resources, and an in-home appointment with a nurse.
